Hidden Risks of WiFi and Networks – or ‘How to Practice Safe Hex’

Presented by Peter Aggus, B.Sc.EE, MIET, MAPM

Do you ever have concerns about what data and access might be exposed when you connect to a network – perhaps you should?

Most of us go for convenience – and network connected devices give us lots of that. But what else do they give, and to whom. Connecting your car to the internet may allow you to remote start it and set the a/c running to cool things down before you get to it – but what can the determined hacker do with that access you just unwittingly gave him.

This light hearted informal discussion highlights some of the dangers of connecting devices to networks without taking adequate precautions. We look at what networking can expose, where you are at risk and what you can do about it. Discussion includes how to identify and create ‘trusted’ networks, use of networks that you may not trust, how to be safe, what can go wrong. We also look at risks of connected home devices and whether, just because you can, you should enable internet access.

Presenter's Bio:

Peter, as an engineer and technology management consultant, has developed innovative and cost-effective solutions for clients in many fields. His project management credentials provide the foundation for his results-oriented approach to successful project outcomes. He is a master facilitator and is responsible for the unique TMC style of stakeholder workshops. These workshops are a key to unlocking stakeholder knowledge that often goes beyond what they thought themselves capable, while building enthusiasm for the planned technology changes. His Business Continuity training enables him to quickly assess an environment and identify failure points, often failure points that have never previously been identified. Peter has led teams of up to 30 members.

Regional Developer - Shirley Franklin CMA, CPB

Regional Meetings are a vital part of that formula for success.

They're a unique chance to combine learning – a guest speaker shares expertise that's sure to make your work a bit easier – with fun and powerful networking.

Attending this meeting qualifies for one Professional Development Credit

Each meeting includes a guest speaker with a Q&A session; a discussion among the attendees about a marketing topic, a challenge someone may be facing, or another topic important to you; and networking. Non-members are welcome to attend two meetings to evaluate IPBC. Afterwards, you must join to participate in Regional Meetings.

Our meetings are "Scent Free” and business casual attire is appreciated. This is a business meeting. Please, turn off your cell phone before entering the room, and sorry no children allowed.

We look forward to seeing you there!
